Indiana's Grape

Updated: Jul 17, 2018

Hello all!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Indiana wineries have been popping up left and right over the last 10 years. When we opened our family vineyard in 2017 there were 94 wineries in Indiana. Today, there are 105 Indiana wineries! According to 2017 Indiana Wine Industry Economic Impact Study, the full economic impact of Indiana wine and wine grapes was $604 million… sounds like we need a few more vineyards and wineries!

You might think it odd that Indiana would be known for something other than corn, but it’s true: we grow good grapes here!! In fact, the Traminette varietal was named Indiana’s Signature Grape in 2009. This grape varietal was chosen due to its cold hardiness, vigorous growth and its adaptiveness to Indiana’s ever-changing climate. Traminette presents floral (roses and jasmine) and spicy (nutmeg, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon) characteristics. This wine pairs with Cheddar and Raclette cheese and medium-bodied dishes such as pasta and shrimp.

Traminette is not the only varietal successful in Indiana. Here at Daniel’s Family Vineyard and Winery, we grow 8 different varietals including Noiret, Marquette and Catawba, just to name a few! Varietal selection is key to successful production. We take special care to choose varietals that will produce the best wine for you, our guest.

Head out to Daniel's Family Vineyard and Winery to check out our state of the art tasting room and try a glass of our Traminette! We look forward to seeing you soon!
